Mouse won’t work in MS Word 2007 and Word Crashes on Close

I’ve had this issue a couple of times with MS Word 2007. Word won’t accept any mouse inputs, have to do every thing with the keyboard. Also, when you close Word, it crashes and tries to re-start unless you cancel out of it. As I started to research this, I came across some articles that tell you to change the options in Word by clicking on the ribbon and clicking “Word Options” it turns out, that since there is no mouse support, you can’t change any of the options.

In any case. I found the REAL fix on Joe Stagner’s blog at http://joeon.net/post/2008/01/Fixing-Word-2007-Crash-on-Exit-amp;-Broken-Mouse-Support!.aspx

Here’s the bottom line – you need to delete the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

If you are unfamiliar with the System Registry you need to proceed with caution. If you make wrong changes to the registry you may cause irreparable damage.

  • Click on “Start” button
  • Type “regedit” in search box
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
  • Delete the Data key (it looks like a folder but it is actually a registry key)
  • Close the Registry Editor
